“SCENES OF NATURAL GRANDEUR MAKE BELIEVERS OF US ALL OR AT LEAST MAKE US CONTEMPLATE THE PRESENCE OF A HIGHER POWER. “ When I ventured into the adrenaline dripping world of trekking and climbing, a seasoned trekker told me that the trek to Chandertaal over Hampta Pass was a good point of initiation. And, of course he was right. That being said now let me share some gyaan shyaan about this fabulous trek. Kullu and Lahual are two adjoining districts and are separated by the formidable Rohtang La. Rohtang La is snow bound from October to June. Bothe the valleys are geographically quite different. The Kullu/Manali valleys are green with thick forest cover and heavy rains. However, Lahaul is in a rain-shadow area with partial Trans-Himalayan barrenness. The trail to Chandertaal over Hampta Pass combines both these areas gives a wonderful walk with two completely different terrains to enjoy. Like I mentioned before, the trek to Chandertaal is ideal as a point of initiation in to the world of trekking. As we trek on this trail, we will cross a high pass, dark pine forests, lush green meadows to glacial valleys and stunning views. Ideal time to go on this trek is early June to late October. It is one of the most fascinating and a moderate trek, beginning from Manali and leading in to The Lahaul Valley of Himachal Pradesh. The path was also the ancient trade route between the Kullu and Lahaul Valley. Legend has it that this is the path The Pandavas took on their way to heaven and that it was Chandertaal from where Yudhishtra (Eldest amongst the Pandavas of Mahabharata epic) was taken to heaven in his mortal form. We will drive from dA Base – Mountaineerz to the village of Prini and will start our trek from there. We will head on to Chikka and cross the villages of Sethan and Hampta en route. The valley is very thick and closed. Forested slopes are visible to the east of Chikka, surmountable after 3 to 4 hrs of scrambling. Fear not, my friend. J Here, we will be rewarded with an excellent view of Deo Tibba and Indrasan group of peaks. After Chikka, we will walk at almost the same height and head on to Balu ka Ghera and will cross Juara on the way. If we are a big group, Balu ka Ghera is where we will camp for the second night. Else, Ratni Thach is where we will set up camp. After crossing over the Hampta Pass, we will arrive at our next camping spot – the beautiful Shiya Goru. From here it is a short walk to Chatru, from where we will drive to Chandertaal and camp a short distance away from the lake. This is a common practice amongst campers and trekkers so as to maintain the sanctity of the lake. You will go crazy with all the beauty you will see. Chandertaal reflects colors off it in the early morning light that you never thought existed on any spectrum. We drive back to Manali from Chandertaal and stop at Batal or Chatru for lunch. Or, if you are a bit most adventurous, we encourage you to walk back to the road head at Batal from where the vehicle will pick you up and drive you to Manali. However, if you want to really get the vibe of the culture and actually witness the challenges that the locals face on a day to day basis but are absolutely unfazed by them and they do so with a smile and a great zest for life. I took my husband’s word for it and bravely boarded a HPTDC bus from Kaza and heading to Manali. I boarded the bus at about 2:00 pm, after lunch at Batal and boy did I have a tough time holding my food down on the ride back. J It was a roller coaster ride rolled in with some unbelievable control of the driver over this monstrosity, crazy navigation, thunderous roar of the engine on every ascent and the cheering of the crowd on successful crossing of every crazy naalaah. And, there were over 27 when I counted. J The group energy was awesome what with people chattering and cheering. Well, that was my experience and a great one at that. I would certainly suggest that for every serious trekker. All I can say is, this is one trek that did leave me wanting for more and the last thought when I got back was certainly not, “Thank God it’s over”. J We have the option of trekking on to surajtaal and meet the road head at Baralacha La in 3 days and come back driving on the famed Leh – Manali highway. The other option is to combine it with the Spiti road trip and visit Kaza, Key, Kibber, Tabo, Nako, Dhankaar etc. Now, that is what I call wholesome adventure. J There is another option for people hungry for more. We can drive to Kibber and from there do the famous 6000 mt hike to Mt. Kanamo. The unique thing about this hike is that you gain an altitude of 6000 mt (summit) in one day and be back at the base foe a warm bowl of soup. J This is an experience which can be rarely found. J

It is now time to get shutter happy with your camera. The final ridge is a little steep to climb and when snow-bound you will you will have to cut steps in the ice up the pass. The view from here is jaw dropping. The peaks of in Lahaul, particularly in the Kulti valley and of the Chandrabhaga group, are seen as a huge cluster, with peak of Mulkila IV raising its head above them. From top of the pass you can see the majestic Mt. Deo Tibba (6001 m), Indrasan (6221 m) and the mighty Greater Himalayan and Pir Panjal Range. A short descent leads to the campsite at Shiya Goru. We will camp in a beautiful meadow by the stream. Day 04: SHIYA GORU – CHATTRU (33600 MTS) – BATAL (3960 MTS) - CHANDERTAAL (4300 MTS) Today’s trek begins with crossing a small stream and a walk following the valley stream down to the mighty River Chandra. The descent to River Chandra is a bit steep and follows a long ridge. Once in the valley you will rejoin the road which crosses the bridge across the river to Chatru. However gentle the river appears, do not try to ford the River Chandra – always use a bridge. This deceptive river has swept away many trekkers trying to take a shortcut. Arriving by the side of Manali-Spiti road at Chattru, we will stop here for tea and lunch break before driving to Chandertaal via Chhota Dhara (3517 mts) and Batal. There are lovely views of the “Chhota Shigri” (small glacier) and “Bara Shigri” (big glacier) along with several high peaks of Lahaul. From Batal onwards it can be very windy as the valley opens up here. The road climbs steeply around many bends to Kunzum La in the east. This road leads to Spiti valley. There is a new footpath leading from Kunzum La that descends to Chandertaal, however the more direct approach is the road from Batal, going into the Chandra valley in the north. We wil be driving along the left bank river Chandra after crossing a bridge near Batal. The trail continues for about 14 km to the scenic campsite at the bank of Chandertaal, from here you can see the panoramic view of the Chandra-Bhaga Range. The massive Samundri Tapu glacier joins the valley from the west. It is linked with some major peaks and the Mulkila group at its head.
