The biggest festival of Kerala is here – ONAM (16th September)!!
Onam is one of the most popular festivals in India. It is a much-awaited event in Kerala as the occasion marks the return of the mythical King Mahabali. This ten-days long festival falls during the harvest season, making it is even more significant for the people of Kerala.

High Spirit:-
There is a lot more to Onam than being just a festival. Onam reflects the faith of the people of Kerala. The remarkable thing you can notice is..the high spirit of the people who go out of the way to celebrate the festival in the prescribed manner and a grand fashion. People of all religions, castes and communities celebrate the festival with equal joy and verve. Onam also helps to create an atmosphere of peace and brotherhood by way of various team sports organised on the day.
Weather:-
Onam is celebrated at a time when everything appears so nice and good. The beautiful landscape of Kerala can be seen in its full radiance at this time. It seems, even weather also seeks to be a part of the festival. It contributes by becoming pleasantly warm and sunny. Fields look brilliant with a bountiful harvest. Farmers feel on top of the world as they watch the result of their hard labour with pride.
Snake Boat Races: -
A snake boat is actually a long traditional canoe style boat used by the people of the Kuttanadu region, in south India’s state of Kerala. Typical snake boats are 100 to 120 feet long, and hold around 100 rowers. Each of the villages in the region has its own snake boat, which they take great pride in. Every year the villagers get together and race the boats along the lakes and rivers. There are different races held in different rivers and lakes. One in Alleppey’s Punnamda Lake . The oldest and the most popular one is held along the river at Champakkulam which is around 25kms from alleppy. One more is held at Payippad Lake (approx 35kms from Alleppy.) And the other in Pampa River at Aranmula.
Snake boat races are the highlight of the Onam festival.
